Apollo Tonks & Mattie Dukelow: Engagement Fic Meme

Well. This was unexpected.

It was just a simple Christmas dinner, that was all. Mattie and Benny and their four young children were sitting around, enjoying the goose and their satsumas and all the candy that children aren't allowed to eat, except on Christmas. Everyone was laughing and having a good time, and Mattie felt at peace with the present moment, neither looking at the past nor at the future, but simply at the here and now.

That was when the doorbell rang. Little Benny was the one to hop out of his chair and get it, and Mattie felt her heart jump into her throat when she saw who came in, particularly realizing how appropriate it was that her youngest son had been the one to answer the door. Benny, her husband, had a frown on his face as an unshaven, unshowered and obviously drunk Apollo Tonks stumbled into the dining room and towards Mattie.

"Tonks..." Benny's tone was warning and his hand was on his wand, but Apollo simply got on one knee when he reached Mattie's side.

"Lizzhie left me," he informed her, slurring his words together. Tears filled his eyes and Mattie couldn't decide if she was more disgusted by or sorry for the man who knelt before her. "She found out about usssh an' left...she couldn't sshtand it..." He cut off with a sob and Mattie gave Benny a frantic look. Her husband seemed unable to do anything but gape at the scene being played before him, and Mattie wished that he would do something sensible and take the children out of the room. The four of them, Little Benny especially, looked nearly as stunned as their father, and Mattie could do nothing about it.

"You know, it'ssh you Mattie." Apollo seemed unaware of the audience around them. "It'sssh alwayssh been you." And he took her hand; Mattie fought the urge to jerk away. "Will you marry me?"

Everything seemed to freeze and Mattie suddenly felt incredibly dizzy. Then there was a bang and Apollo was passed out on the floor, which was the last thing Mattie saw before she fainted dead away.
